The proposals for debate are: Should backboards be used in unstable fractures of the spine and other suspected back injuries . In addition to this subject the Panel have combined also Concerns that over 50% of trauma patients are arriving in hospital with obstructed airways Some of the articles and concerns that have been identified so far include: - A comparison of the spinal board and the vacuum stretcher, spinal stability and interface pressure by M.E. Lovell and J.H.Evens Nobles Hospital, Isle of Man. UK. We hope to reprint this soon for Panel Members consideration and comment. - It has been identified that by using spinal boards together with head huggers that the patient may not be best positioned for patient airway management, thereby creating an obstructed the airway. We need examples of experiences to determine best practice to overcome such problems ? - Patients may occupy spinal boards for a number of hours, and a considerable number of patients have complained of the pain from other injuries such a contusions, and debris digging into skin levels, were clothing and skin has been contaminated by glass, grit and the such like. It has then been found that the suspected back injury did not perhaps warrant such handling and immobilisation. Are the present strict protocols too rigid, when perhaps better training, common sense and other methods may be more appropriate ? - Vacuum stretchers have been used to very good effect in the UK Private Sector, and are also in common use throughout the EEC countries The Panel now needs your individual input, opinions, experiences. They also need any papers, proposals on investigations, implementation, or experience, so that the end results will be Adopting Best Practice through Tried and Tested methods The panel would also like existing and new Web-Site Panel members to assist in recommending by invitation any new Web-Site panel members. It may be a work colleague who has Ambulance or Health Experience that would benefit the United Kingdom, or some one who has been at the client end of the process. This new Web-site was launched through some 100 invitations., and the response has been remarkable, and the panel would like to thank you all for your individual participation. The panel would also like to expand that participation to 1,000, Can you help ? Send their e-mail addresses to the Administrator or Web Master or you can now invite them yourselves.
